For lots of people, the biggest challenge of their martial arts journey is having the courage to show up for their first class. It's hard to try something new as an adult, especially if you don't know what to expect! That's why we've put together this guide, so you know what to expect both at your new student meeting with Professor Will, and when you come to your first class.

What to expect at your new student meeting

The new student meeting will last about 30-40 minutes. You'll meet Professor Will at Misfit BJJ in downtown Northfield. This meeting consists of:

  • a tour of the gym

  • some chit chat to get to know you a little bit (for example, what you do for work, how you got interested in Jiu-Jitsu, etc)

  • going over the gym rules and expectations

  • going over the gi (uniform), how to order one, and Misfit BJJ's gi lending policy for your first few classes

  • going over how belt ranks and promotions work

  • going over what to expect in your first class

  • answering any questions you may have

  • You'll receive a waiver to fill out and bring to your first class.

What to expect at your first class

You should plan to arrive 15 minutes early to your first class, so you have plenty of time to get changed, fill out your waiver if you haven't already, and feel settled before class starts.

When you come to your first class, you should bring a water bottle, a pair of slip-on shoes/sandals, shorts and a t-shirt to wear underneath your gi, and your completed waiver.

Class is one hour long, and this is the general flow of class:

  • line up in order of belt rank, and bow in

  • 10-15 minutes: warm ups (usually solo movement drills. On your first day, Professor Will will work closely with you to teach you some fundamental warm-ups.)

  • 5 minutes: stretch; share names and pronouns; discuss the Etiquette Spotlight of the week

  • 10-15 minutes: grip breaks or takedowns, usually from standing

  • remaining time (30-35 minutes): techniques from the ground

  • line up in order of belt rank, and bow out

  • There will usually be 10-30 minutes allotted for optional additional training or stretching after class.

  • After your first class, Professor Will will check in with you to discuss what you thought of class and whether Misfit BJJ seems like a good fit for you, and next steps if you'd like to join!
