Testimonials

“Misfit BJJ has a very relaxed and fun environment and I really enjoyed the class I just took there. I loved how Will broke down every technique into bite sized easy to learn steps and gave great feedback. This made the class feel very calm, relaxed, and easy to follow. I also really liked how Will showed us that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu could easily be adapted to anyone's needs. If someone had a hard time with a certain technique or had an injury preventing a movement they were easily able to substitute another move instead that worked better for them. My favorite part of the class was at the end when we put it all together. We took the minor movements we had learned and everyone was able to put them together to pull off a seemingly far more impressive technique. I could tell that this could easily come in handy if I ever do need to defend myself. I know I've only learned a little bit but what I did learn was great and the relaxing atmosphere was perfect. Now I look forward to learning more Brazilian Jiu Jitsu!” -Karsten S. (Self Defense Seminar participant)

“Will is a talented and knowledgeable jiu jitsu coach. They created a fun, relaxed but focused environment where I could both learn a lot and apply and refine my new knowledge in live rolling. If I could, I'd train with them all the time! Anyone with a black belt in jiu jitsu is already on another level of toughness and skill, but to combine that with the heart to create a safe and effective learning space for people who regularly experience marginalization... That really makes Will stand out from a group of already outstanding people. If you are lucky enough to have access to their Northfield gym, I highly highly recommend studying with Will!!”

"I love training at Misfit BJJ! I've been practicing Brazilian jiu jitsu since 2016 and Misfit is one of the warmest and most welcoming gyms I've ever been to. Will is an excellent coach who teaches with great precision and patience. They are also an expert in adapting techniques and drills to suit the levels, bodies, and moods of the students. I can't recommend this spot enough!"

“My first experience at Misfit BJJ was when Will and Jem offered an Intro Self-Defense Training for the Chamber.  They had just joined the Chamber and wanted us to experience what they do.  Not being as flexible as the other participants, I appreciated the special attention that I received in doing alternative moves that would fit my abilities.  I loved being able to participate right along with my co-workers and members.  I really felt like I was part of the group!  Thanks, Will and Jem for being such great instructors.”

“…I learned a lot and felt like I really gained some skills with Misfit BJJ. The instructor Will Wiedenhoeft was AMAZING… I have a physical condition that makes mobility, balance, and grip difficult for me sometimes and Will did not miss a beat with a good modification for me. Will also told, modeled in slow mo, showed in real time and gave us space to practice the skill they were sharing. So So good y'all highly recommend Misfit BJJ if you want to build some skills and learn some moves!”

“I joined Misfit partly to develop confidence and self esteem, and I have really appreciated Coach Will's ability to break things down in ways that are easy to implement if I'm feeling stuck or confused. Will is highly encouraging, and training with them feels fun and collaborative. Lessons are engaging, and I really like being able to move, train hard, and sweat, but I love that Coach Will is highly attentive to their students' individual needs and limitations. As a person who has never really been flexible throughout my life, it's been helpful to have an instructor that can work with me if that's impacting my ability to move a certain way during training, and I never feel judged. Will is very good at paying attention to what their students need, physically and mentally, to get concepts to click. The learning environment during group lessons is very friendly and respectful, and I like that as a complete beginner I was able to start training with people at all skill levels pretty much immediately. The gym is a very clean, welcoming space, and there is a nice balance of regularity and variation in the structure of lessons so that you get the opportunity to learn and practice a healthy mix of new and old stuff. I find that Coach Will is very good at connecting concepts between lessons as well. Jiu-Jitsu is a fun way to develop a sense of physical security in my body, and as a trans person, it's incredibly valuable to have a community space to do that without fear of judgment. Will has so much passion for Jiu-Jitsu, and they have cultivated a really awesome, joyful space to train!” -Liam E.

“Coach Will helped me feel welcomed and safe in their studio. This was my first time taking any type of class like this. As an adult it can be hard to try new things. I was pleasantly surprised how much of a confidence boost I felt even after just one class. Highly recommend!”
